WebIf you use spackle, it should be wiped until even with the wall. Spackle should only fill the hole. There should be little to no spackle on the remaining wall. Then when you paint, there will be no trace that the spot was spackled. I agree with you in OP's case, spackle might not even be necessary. Sanding might be fine.
